Before and After Liposuction

If you are considering having a liposuction procedure, you will need to schedule a consultation with a cosmetic surgeon to find out what types of liposuction are available, what would best suit your specific situation, and to receive before and after liposuction procedure instructions. How your liposuction procedure is performed will depend a great deal on the technique that is used.

Tumescent liposuction

Tumescent is the most common form of liposuction that is performed. Your surgeon will inject fluids into the area of your body that is being treated, causing it to swell and stiffen. The amount of fluid that is used will depend on your size as well as the area of your body that is being worked on; it most instances, it will be up to three times the volume of fat that's being removed.

The injected fluid is a mixture of salt water, an anesthetic and a drug called epinephrine, will cause your blood vessels to constrict to minimize the loss of blood during the procedure. This anesthetic will also help to alleviate any pain that you may be experiencing. The salt water will help your surgeon to remove the fat and will be suctioned out along with the fat.

Your surgeon will then makes small cuts into your skin, inserting a tube called a cannula that is about as thick as a thin writing pen; it will be placed just under your skin. The cannula will be connected to a vacuum that will suck the fat and fluids from your body.

Because you're losing fat and fluids from the procedure, your surgeon will use an intravenous line or IV to replenish your body fluid.

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction

Ultrasound-assisted liposuction (UAL) is often times used in combination with tumescent liposuction. During this procedure, your surgeon will insert a metal rod or tube that produces ultrasonic energy under your skin. This forces the fat cell walls to burst and liquefy the fat for easier removal.

Powered liposuction

Powered liposuction uses a cannula that moves back-and-forth in a rapid motion. Through this vibration your surgeon is able to retrieve tough fat more easily. This is less pain and swelling with this procedure and it allows your surgeon to remove fat with more precision, especially on smaller areas, like as the arm, knee or ankle.

There are numerous cosmetic surgeons in your area who can help you get rid your double chin or assist you in any other cosmetic surgery procedure that you may want to have done.
