Reasons for Infertility Problem

When a couple feels that they are emotionally and financially ready, there is no better way to celebrate the love in a relationship than by deciding to have a child. Most couples just go right ahead with trying to conceive and hope for the best. Some couples end up conceiving within a short amount of time.

However, for those who have been actively trying to conceive for more than a year without any success, they need to look into the possibility that one or both halves of the couple might have infertility problems. In the days before medical technology, all a couple could do was either keep trying, or think about adopting.

Now that medical technology has advanced as far as it has, couples who are faced with the possibility of infertility have more options that will allow them to conceive. However, before actual procedures can be done to reverse the infertility, it is important that the couple first seek out a clinic for infertile couples. The clinic should have an excellent staff of doctors, as well as a high success rate of couples conceiving.

The male will be the first person to be checked for infertility, since the tests that are done on him are far less invasive than the ones that will need to be done on the female. The male will first need to give a sperm sample, which will be analyzed in a laboratory. The things that will be looked for are the presence of a low sperm count, as well as irregularly formed sperm.

In order to understand why these two things are looked for, it is important to understand how actual fertilization takes place. Once the male ejaculates into the female during the peak of sexual arousal, then the sperm travels up the fallopian tubes. Only one of the sperm actually gets to fertilize the egg. Once the egg is fertilized, it travels back down the fallopian tubes and attaches itself to the wall of the uterus, thus starting the actual pregnancy.

If the male has a low sperm count, then the chances of the sperm fertilizing the egg are considerably lessened. If the sperm of the male is malformed, then it probably is not strong enough to make it to the female in the first place. If the former is the case, then artificial insemination will probably be the first procedure that is tried. In this procedure, the sperm is surgically injected directly into the fallopian tubes, thus increasing the chance of pregnancy. The latter problem might require medication.

If the male is tested and it is discovered that there are no problems with his reproductive system, then it is time for the female to be checked. Some of her eggs will probably need to be extracted to check if they are healthy, and an ultrasound will be scheduled to see if her uterus is healthy. If it is found that she has a condition such as endometriosis, then medication on additional surgery might be required. So, the important thing to remember is that there are definite ways for a couple to start a family.
